Abstract

This paper examines how automotive manufacturers in Hungary and Czechia have implemented resilience and sustainability measures within new product development (NPD). Building on the resource dependence theory (RDT), it uses data from eleven in-depth interviews triangulated with suppliers’ codes of conduct and non-financial reports. Resilience considerations and dependencies, as expected by RDT, shape the NPD decisions and sustainability is embedded, especially when prompted by customers or company needs for higher efficiency.

The research is limited by the selection of large companies as well as by the sample size, while the case study approach enables us to dive into the strategies. The research pointed to the importance of strategic procurement and the role of original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) and multinationals’ management in the operational process. We contribute to extant literature by linking supply chain resilience and sustainability with NPD in an asymmetric and dependency-driven process.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated widespread adoption of digital solutions, including applications, intranets, social media, online communication platforms, and other online and remote business solutions. While some of these practices persisted in the post-COVID era, others were modified or abandoned. This study investigates the digital practices of six automotive and electronics subsidiaries in Hungary during the pandemic and over the subsequent three years. The authors’ findings indicate that practices beneficial to companies, such as technological innovations, online training, or meetings, remained integral to operations even after the pandemic. However, the continuity of other practices, such as working from home or remote work, depended on the nature of the position (whether it is related to physical production) and the company’s organizational and business culture (in both home and host countries).

Abstract

The current Hungarian foreign policy is committed to the integration of the Western Balkan countries and has been supportive in this regard ever since the country first gained European Union (EU) Membership in 2004. Hungary borders the Western Balkans and hence the region’s stability is crucial in both political and economic senses. However, compared to its previous strategy, the EU is now more cautious, preferring a stricter conditionality and slower accession for (potential) candidate countries. By contrast, Hungary is keen to speed up enlargement and would not only want to accelerate the process, but would also prefer to ease accession conditions. Nevertheless, it is recognised that rapid enlargement could undermine the entire European integration project’s internal cohesion and thus do more harm than good.

Abstract

In this paper, we focus on the disruptions of automotive GSCs and their resilience building in Central Europe where the economic role of the automotive sector and its connected industries is highly significant. We apply a qualitative approach based on interviews to investigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim was to discover the measures and strategies the automotive firms adopted to counter the pandemic effects in Hungary and Czechia. Based on the literature, we define the framework of the given CE companies’ resilience building techniques. We mapped the measures companies used against the pandemic and analysed the various resilience-building techniques they applied. These measures are similar to those employed in previous local shocks, but we found an increased role of communication and collaboration. We also found some variations according to the firms’ position in international networks.

Abstract

This research investigates the proactive and reactive measures applied by Czech and Hungarian automotive companies following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We apply a qualitative methodology and analyse interviews with company managers to learn about the applied measures. The results reveal that the resilience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic involved proactive measures, which companies have kept in place. Reactive measures involved production replanning and alternative transportation. Adopting multiple sourcing strategies in the automotive sector is limited and more reactive rather than proactive. The important antecedents of agility are information sharing and cooperation within multinationals.
