This project investigates the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in shaping economic development, competitiveness and global integration in Hungary and Slovenia during the two decades following EU accession. It examines both inward and outward FDI, focusing on their impact on productivity, innovation, participation in global value chains, industrial policy and firms’ internationalisation. Combining econometric and statistical analyses with company surveys and case studies, the project pays particular attention to domestic multinational enterprises, technology-oriented start-ups and knowledge transfer mechanisms. The research aims to improve our understanding of how different forms of FDI contribute to sustainable economic growth and long-term competitiveness in small open economies. Its findings will provide evidence-based policy recommendations for strengthening innovation, industrial development and international competitiveness.
