On behalf of the Organisers, we kindly invite you to submit your papers for the EADI conference Views on development from the peripheries of Europe. HUN-REN Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Institute of World Economics in Budapest will host the event with a program encompassing two days.

EADI’s 50th anniversary in 2024 presents a good occasion to take stock of the state of development studies and the understanding of development in the European peripheries. The countries on the periphery of Europe have been an object of development policies themselves, some of them lived through quasi colonial periods and therefore, the relevance of decolonisation and development issues and their perceptions seem to be different from those in the core countries, which also happen to be the biggest aid donors. In cooperation with EADI, three member institutions from Czechia, Hungary and Slovenia organise a conference in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organisation.

The topics of the conference will be addressing the following questions, but submissions on other relevant problems are also welcome:

  • How have development studies evolved in the peripheries of Europe?
  • How did the double experience of being both aid donors and recipients inform their understanding of development?
  • Why does the perception of ‘decolonisation’ differ in the peripheries of Europe from that of the core?
  • Why do the topics/problems covered/studied differ from those in the core countries?
What path dependency, historical, geographic, economic, political and colonial reasons are at play?
  • How do peripheries in Europe differ from each other in terms of the evolution of development studies?
  • Has the idea and process of Europeanisation brought closer the perception of development studies in the core and in the peripheries of Europe?
  • Given the multidisciplinary-interdisciplinary nature of development studies, what areas, disciplines and approaches are at the forefront in the peripheries of Europe and why?

The best papers presented will be published in a special issue of the European Journal of Development Research. Details will follow later.

Abstracts (max. 300 words) are welcome until 20 March 2024 through using the provided template. Please, send the abstract to eadiconference@krtk.hun-ren.hu. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by the 30th of March.
