EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium: the Institute of World Economics creates synergies with the University of Public Service

EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium: the Institute of World Economics creates synergies with the University of Public Service

The Institute of World Economics, a member of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium organised a workshop with lecturers and PhD students of the University of Public Service on 19 June 2023.  The workshop was chaired by Erzsébet N. Rózsa academic advisor at the Institute of World Economics and professor at the University of Public Service. The participants of the workshop pointed out that since the Russian-Ukrainian War security policy issues have gained greater interest in the Hungarian public discourse, however, domestic academic research should pay more attention to the theoretical background of arms control, non-proliferation and nuclear deterrence. In addition, the participants of the workshop discussed the actualities of export controls on emerging technologies. As the US-China strategic rivalry intensifies, export control of emerging technologies is increasingly gaining importance. The US, together with Japan and the European Union, is trying to build a coalition to control the export of these advanced technologies (e. g. AI-systems, microprocessor technology, additive manufacturing), but currently the EU fails to harmonise more closely its trade and security policy. In addition to export controls, researchers of the Institute have pointed out that some Chinese investments currently undergo investment screening, which can pose security risks to the EU member states. In the future, researchers from the University of the Public Service and the Institute of World Economic will conduct joint research on emerging technologies and their implications on export control as well as theoretical approaches to nuclear deterrence.
